Tea Cake baked with Edible Roses

Roses are not just an elegant flower for your vase, use them for baking too! This tea cake is not only beautiful, it’s delicious. I was suspicious about using flowers in my baking but after trying it I was surprised to find how delicious it was. Image may be NSFW.

Items needed:

1.White cake mix or use your own cake recipe. I am a fan of quick mixes as I am usually short on time ;) In fact I am looking at the clock right now, making sure I don’t miss my next appointment!

2. rose water, you can find this at Whole foods or Lassen’s or order it on line

3. Six roses, one for baking and the others are for decorating if you choose

4. Vanilla Icing

5. Apricot food coloring

1. Bake your cake according to the box directions

2. Add in 3 tbsp of rose water

3. Rinse and cut with kitchen scissors one complete rose. (no stem or leaves of course!) Also, this feels completely wrong the first time you do this. A part of you will keep saying “NO! put me in a beautiful vase!” Mix the roses into your cake mix.

4. Add one drop of apricot food coloring, don’t completely mix it into your cake mix, just swirl it through the mixture.

5. Pour batter into a cake pan of your choice. I chose to do a top and bottom cake with icing in the middle, but you can do whatever you prefer.

6. Bake and cool your cake or cakes completely

7.  Frost. I melted my frosting and drizzled it over the top, I wanted a vintage look.

8. Add your roses for decoration. Now I do not recommend trying to eat an entire rose, however, if you wanted to add a couple petals to each slice as you serve the cake that would be fine. Some people love the taste right away, some feel it is an acquired taste.

9. Serve with warm English tea, so good!
